Spiced Grapefruit Granita
Hi all, I hope you’re all doing good as always..!!!
I’ve been thinking for a while now of sharing this italian semi-frozen dessert and I finally did it. Yayyy… Up here today is the Spiced Grapefruit Granita. It is related to Sorbet and Italian Ice. It basically either consists of Chunks or smooth Sorbet. This popularly is done using freezing techniques i.e. for making smooth Granita the gelato machine is used, whereas for the chunky/ coarser ones are frozen and whisked and then is shaved/scraped to produce crystals. And you know, the taste of Granita’s are always different from that of an Ice-Cream.
The one I made is the Coarser/Crystal/Chunky Spiced Grapefruit Granita. It may be served a slush as well, since not always it’s a dessert or an Ice-Cream. Spiced Grapefruit Granita is a perfect quencher for Summer… It’s delightful, delicious, appetizing and toothsome. But wait…!! who says that it’s only a summer refreshment? Granita can be made in any season and can be had anytime, why just restrict it to summers..??? Summer’s already got quite a great list of appetite to be enjoyed. And to be true… no, I just can’t wait for summers to come but can have ’em the whole year…. Hehe 🙂
Even the Ingredients are short-listed and easily available. So as the name says Grapefruit… YES..!! It does have the Grapefruit pulp as well as it’s zest. Flavourful and tasty, yum! The other Ingredients include ginger, cinnamon, sugar aaaannnddd Patience…. Oh yeah, patience is indeed the most important thing you need to have until you’re ready to go with Spiced Grapefruit Granita. 🙂

Let’s now hop on to the method.
4nos, ruby grapefruits (pulped/juiced)
1&½ inch, cinnamon stick
1 tablespoon, ginger, grated
¾ cup, sugar
1&1/4 cup, water
Zest of one grapefruit.
In a pan, add water, sugar, ginger, cinnamon and grapefruit zest. Place the pan n heat and bring it to a boil. Simmer for 3-4 minutes, until sugar dissolves well. Take it off the heat and cool. Chill in the refrigerator.
Once chilled, strain the syrup. Add grapefruit juice and mix. If you prefer it to be pulpy, just add the juice as it is or you may also strain the juice and proceed.
Now, pour the mixture in to a tray such that the level of the granita is not more than 1 inch
Freeze it for 2 hours. After 2 hours, take the mixture out and scrape it well with fork
Freeze again for couple of hours while scraping it every 30-40 minutes. Scraping the granita at regular intervals gives a perfect texture to granita.
To serve, scoop out the granita in serving glasses or bowls, garnish with mint and slice of grapefruit. Serve immediately
